Blessed Art Thou
The above painting is by Kate Kretz of North Carolina.
"My intention was to ask a question and get people to think," Kretz said in a telephone interview Friday from Miami. "I had no idea so many people would be asking a question and thinking."
On her blog, Kretz, 43, said the painting addresses "the celebrity worship cycle." She said she chose Jolie for the subject "because of her unavoidable presence in the media, the worldwide anticipation of her child, her 'unattainable' beauty and the good that she is doing in the world through her example, which adds another layer to the already complicated questions surrounding her status."

I'm sorry. I just do not see how Jolie is helping anything or anyone.
I mean if you have to portray yourself in such a demeaning way are you really helping?
My sister brought up a very valid point last week during one of our many debates. Her issue was with Madonna but I think it applies to all females in the public arena.
If one is continually portraying themselves as a sex object, engaging in "acts" of sex for public consumption....in essence perpetuating a stereotype.....then how can one not be responsible for the crisis of sexually transmitted diseases?
I'm not saying that women cause AIDS, or any other STD only that, through their public personna, they can increase the interest in sex and sexuality.
I'm sorry but the last thing I'd want to be known for is Ethan Hawke sucking on my boobies in a B Movie....or my obsession with flaunting my crotch.
I do not admire her at all. There are many, many selfless women adopting, raising and sacrificing their lives to better a childs world. I suppose that if you are "ugly", unsexy or just average you do not merit having your face plastered all over the media, and, to warrant accolades for the LEAST you could do with such priviledge is an insult to those who do it with much less.
I think Rosie O'Donnell is a far better example of an adoptive parent. The only reason no one notices is perhaps because she keeps her clothes on?
The painting isn't meant to glorify Jolie but to get others to question, and debate, the celebrity in society ~ " I am interested in the psychological ramifications of celebrity worship, particularly as they relate to class.". Take a look at her blog, http://katekretz.blogspot.com/, for her response to the uproar and her thoughts on the painting.
Otherwise, I don't disagree with you. Why any of these people get the attention they do is beyond me.
I lurrved Angelina's portrayal of Alexander The Great's mother in the somnambulistic extravaganza Alexander
...to be perfectly honest I had no idea that his mom was a Russian Sexpot Herpetologist! Grrr.
I think that her painting is appropriate for the aisle containing Feminine Hygenic Notions and Sundry Goods...
I wouldn't want to see it near the Cheese or Meat Market because that would be demeaning.
Although I am horrified by the banality of our Cult of Celebrity Angelina is on my 'to do' list and so is Salma Hayek..
so please stop making fun of my sex objects.
"Russian Sexpot Herpetologist!" LMAO!
I didn't see the movie because I know all movies screw with the history, which makes me crazy. There's just no point to seeing historical adaptations created by hollywood.
I think you need new sex objects HE.
