Heat Wave

It's going to be in the middle 70's this week - LOL!  From freezing to baking in just a few days.  But I'll take it.  The daffodils and tulips and crocus are finally showing and it's really looking beautiful out there.

The Yankees are not off to a great start this year.  At least they beat Detroit yesterday, but watching the Yankees is a little painful right now.  The Nationals (the team I cheated on the Yankees with last year) are tied with the Mets (!) for second in the National league.  It is early in the season, but the games I've managed to catch haven't been exactly inspiring.  I'll keep my fingers crossed for the rest of the year.

RIP Margaret Thatcher.

Opening Day

Take me out to the ball game...

Ah, if only I were going to a game today!  Opening day means spring has finally, officially arrived.

Though I see it's snowing in Pittsburgh...

Crochet month is officially over.  I started six projects, finished one.  I will eventually take pictures and upload them.  Eventually.

For the love of the game

I spotted this story on Yahoo! this morning and thought I'd share:

Soldiers find time for hockey in Afghanistan.

My first love is baseball (go Yankees!) but my second is hockey (go Rangers!). I'm used to seeing stories about the armed services playing baseball but this is a first for hockey. Well, for me anyway. Leave it to the Canadians. I love how the soldiers have adapted the game for their environment and their attitude:

In fact, the teams don't even leave the rink. As the warning siren wails, they hit the floor and press themselves against the wooden sidings. Goalies aren't very mobile anyway, Stark said.

"It would be a bit of a challenge to run to a bunker with all that gear," he said. "As soon as the 'all clear,' the game picks up again and away we go."

Go Canada!

And speaking of Canada and hockey... is it me or does it seem the Olympics are late this year? I thought the winter games took place in January, not February. Seems Obama isn't going for security reasons - which must make everyone's life a bit easier.

Rest in Peace Scooter

Phil Rizzuto, Yankees' Hall of Fame shortstop and longtime broadcaster, dies at 89

IMO - all time greatest sports announcer. Period. End of story. The clowns around today are just a waste of time and space. I end up watching baseball with the sound off because I find these people so annoying and inane.

While many announcers spouted statistics, Rizzuto told stories. He delighted television and radio listeners by spinning yarns about his fear of lightning, his favorite place to get a cannoli and the prospect of outfielder Dave Winfield as a candidate for president.

Add insult to injury, the Yankees lost 12 zip to Baltimore. sigh

Yankees Hall of Famer, Broadcaster Phil Rizzuto
